Just introduced this past
winter, SlipStream now offers a flaperon option for all of their
aircraft. This mechanical flaperon kit can be retrofitted to all
existing SlipStream aircraft, and is quite simple to install.
Deflection of the airlerons is
approximately 19 degrees at full deployment, and is meant to provide a
somewhat slower stall speed and better climb performance than aircraft
equipped solely with ailerons. Flaperons offer an attractively
priced alternative to flaps, but are not recommended for use with
floats, where standard flaps are preferred. As with all flaperon
designs, aileron control (i.e., travel) is lessened with deployment, and
caution should be exercised until one becomes proficient in their use.
Flaperons are easily deployed
by means of a crank that is customarily placed on the underside of the
root tube just above and out of the pilot's normal field of vision, yet
are easily accessible, and can be positioned in an infinite range of
settings from 0 to 19 degrees deflection.
